Custom jacket production timeline from design to delivery

How Long Does It Take to Make Custom Jackets?

If you are planning custom jackets for a company, school, university, club or event, one of the first questions is usually:

How long will the jackets take to produce?

For many custom jacket orders, a general production estimate is around 3–8 weeks after the design, specifications and order are confirmed.

However, there is no single production time that applies to every jacket.

A simple fleece jacket with one embroidered logo can move through production much faster than a complex varsity jacket with custom ribknit, several embroidery positions, appliqué, personalised names and inner lining.

The actual lead time depends on the design, materials, quantity, decoration methods and current production queue.

Typical Custom Jacket Production Timeline

A custom jacket order normally goes through several stages before it is ready for delivery.

Stage What Happens
Design & specification Jacket design, colours, materials, logo positions and sizes are confirmed.
Artwork preparation Logos and decoration details are prepared for production.
Material preparation Fabrics, ribknit, lining, accessories and other components are prepared.
First jacket / sample If required, one jacket may be produced for approval before the remaining quantity.
Cutting & sewing Main garment production begins.
Embroidery / printing Logos, names, patches or other decoration are produced.
Finishing & QC Jackets are checked, finished and prepared for packing.
Shipping Completed orders are dispatched to the customer.

Some stages can run in parallel, while others must wait for the previous stage to be completed.

This is why production time should be viewed as a complete process rather than only sewing time.

How Long Does Standard Production Usually Take?

For many of our custom jacket orders, the general production period is approximately 3–5 weeks.

This estimate normally applies after:

  • the order has been confirmed,
  • the design and specifications have been approved,
  • the required payment has been received, and
  • production is ready to begin.

The actual schedule may be shorter or longer depending on the project.

For more complex corporate jackets or specifications involving additional construction and components, production may take approximately 4–8 weeks.

The most accurate estimate can only be given after we review the complete design and specification.

What Can Make Custom Jacket Production Take Longer?

The biggest factor is usually complexity.

Two orders with the same quantity can require very different production times.

For example, a jacket with one small embroidered chest logo is relatively straightforward.

Another jacket may require:

  • Several embroidery positions
  • A large back logo
  • Personalised names
  • Custom patches
  • Appliqué
  • Custom ribknit
  • Inner lining
  • Special pockets
  • Multiple fabric colours
  • Unusual construction details

Every additional process adds another production stage.

This is why we normally ask to see the complete design before confirming a realistic lead time.

Does Embroidery Add Production Time?

Yes, particularly when a jacket has several embroidery positions or large and complex artwork.

Embroidery production time can be affected by:

  • Logo size
  • Stitch count
  • Number of logos
  • Number of jacket pieces
  • Personalised names
  • Embroidery machine scheduling

A small chest logo is very different from a jacket requiring embroidery on the chest, both sleeves and a large design across the back.

For large or highly detailed designs, we may recommend another method such as DTF printing, appliqué or patches if it is more suitable for the artwork.

Read our guide on Embroidery vs DTF Printing for Custom Jackets to understand how these methods differ.

Embroidery time depends on logo size, stitch count, decoration positions and order quantity.

Does Personalisation Take Longer?

Usually, yes.

If every jacket has a different name, number or identification, each garment must be prepared individually.

For example, an order of 50 identical jackets is generally simpler than 50 jackets where every piece has a different embroidered name.

Personalisation does not necessarily add a very long delay, but it does increase production handling and checking requirements.

Customers should therefore provide the final name list carefully before production begins.

What If I Want a Sample First?

For bulk custom orders, a first jacket or sample can be produced after the full order has been confirmed.

This gives the customer an opportunity to check the actual garment before the remaining quantity proceeds.

However, producing a first jacket adds another step to the production timeline.

Order confirmation → first jacket → approval → remaining production

This is different from producing the complete order continuously.

The customer should therefore allow additional time if first-jacket approval is required.

At Eraine Clothing, we do not normally produce a one-piece sample as a separate purchase before a bulk order is confirmed.

Can You Produce Jackets Urgently?

It depends on the production schedule.

Sometimes an order may be completed faster when:

  • The design is straightforward
  • Materials are readily available
  • Artwork is complete
  • There are no major revisions
  • The production queue has available capacity

However, customers should not rely on rush production when planning an event or fixed deadline.

If you have a specific required date, tell us before confirming the order.

We can then check whether the production and delivery schedule is realistic.

Production Queue Matters

Custom apparel manufacturing is different from buying ready-made stock.

Every order has to enter the production schedule.

During busy periods, especially when several large orders are running at the same time, the queue can become longer.

This means two customers ordering the same jacket at different times may receive different estimated completion dates.

If your jackets are required for a particular event, company programme, school activity or launch, confirming the order earlier gives more production flexibility.

Material Availability Can Affect Lead Time

Some fabrics and colours are readily available.

Others may need to be sourced specifically for the project.

Lead time may increase when an order requires:

  • Uncommon colours
  • Special fabric
  • 100% cotton fleece
  • Custom ribknit
  • Special lining
  • Unusual accessories
  • Specific trims

If an exact material is unavailable, we may suggest the closest suitable alternative rather than delaying production unnecessarily.

Custom Ribknit Can Add Extra Time

Varsity jackets often use striped ribknit around the collar, cuffs and waistband.

Standard combinations may be easier to prepare.

However, a completely custom ribknit colour combination may require additional production or sourcing.

This should be confirmed at the quotation and specification stage rather than after sewing has already begun.

How Long Does Shipping Take?

Production time and delivery time are two separate things.

After the jackets are completed and packed, shipping still needs to be added to the total timeline.

For many Malaysia-bound orders, delivery can take approximately 3–5 days, depending on destination, courier operations, customs handling and flight availability.

Delivery to Singapore or other countries may differ.

Customers with a fixed event date should therefore calculate:

Production time + finishing and packing + shipping time + a reasonable buffer

rather than planning only around the estimated sewing completion date.

When Should You Place Your Order?

If your jackets are required for a fixed date, earlier is always safer.

As a general rule, do not wait until the estimated production period exactly matches the number of weeks remaining before your event.

For example, if production is estimated at four weeks, placing the order exactly four weeks before an event leaves no buffer for:

  • Artwork revisions
  • Material availability
  • First-jacket approval
  • Production queue changes
  • Courier delays
  • Unexpected production issues

For important deadlines, we recommend confirming the order as early as possible.

What Can Customers Do to Avoid Delays?

The fastest orders are usually the ones where the information is complete from the beginning.

Before production, prepare:

  • Final jacket design
  • Correct logo files
  • Confirmed quantity
  • Colour requirements
  • Size breakdown
  • Personalised name list, if applicable
  • Delivery destination
  • Required delivery date

Frequent design changes after confirmation can affect both production scheduling and completion time.

Why We Do Not Promise the Same Lead Time for Every Order

Custom jackets are not identical products coming from a fixed production line.

A basic coach jacket, a varsity jacket with several patches and a technical work jacket can require completely different manufacturing processes.

For this reason, a realistic production estimate should always be based on the actual specification.

We would rather provide a realistic timeline after reviewing the design than promise an unrealistic completion date simply to secure an order.

Planning a Custom Jacket Order

If you are preparing a custom jacket project, send us your design or reference together with the estimated quantity and required date.

We can review the specification and advise:

  • Whether the design is practical
  • Which materials are suitable
  • What decoration methods are recommended
  • The estimated production schedule
